My Journey to Becoming a VTS in Dentistry
My journey started in general practice, where I quickly developed a passion for dentistry. I loved how veterinary dentistry was largely technician-driven, with veterinarians trusting us to take the lead. It also presented a bottomless pit of questions—often, I had to research topics because the veterinarians weren’t sure of the answers. Like many technicians, I learned through hands-on experience, but I craved deeper knowledge and a structured understanding of the field. I eventually became the head technician in the dental department and began working closely with a dental specialist who visited twice a month.
The Decision to Specialize
I first heard about the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians (AVDT) and the VTS (Dentistry) certification from Dr. Tony Woodward, DVM, AVDC. After researching the requirements, I initially hesitated—it looked incredibly challenging. But after working alongside Dr. Woodward for several more years, he helped me realize that specializing was exactly what I needed to take my skills to the next level. The process, however, was rigorous.
The Certification Process
- Meet the Eligibility Requirements – This included several years of working as a certified veterinary technician, with the majority of those years focused on dentistry, just to qualify as an applicant.
- Complete Extensive Case Logs – I had to track multiple cases from each required category (periodontics, endodontics, restorations, prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, oral medicine, and exotics) over the two-year credentialing process.
- Write Extensive Case Reports – I submitted five in-depth reports on patients from different categories in the case log section. These reports, totaling about 13 pages, were designed to demonstrate my understanding of current dental standards and were written in a scientific format.
- Attend Advanced Training and CE Courses – Hands-on training in specialized techniques was a crucial part of the process.
- Pass the Examination – The certification process involved two tests: a written exam followed by a hands-on lab portion held at the annual Veterinary Dental Forum.
The Challenges
The journey was anything but easy. Balancing work, study time, and case documentation was overwhelming at times. Fortunately, I was lucky to have financial support for CE courses, training, and the exam. However, the biggest challenge was overcoming self-doubt—wondering if I was truly capable of achieving this specialization.
Time management became critical, as I had to dedicate hours outside of work to studying, writing case reports, and attending CE courses. Networking with other VTS technicians and mentors was invaluable in staying motivated and refining my skills. The support from my peers helped me push through the more difficult moments of the process. I even found a study buddy across the country, and we are still friends to this day!
The Rewards
Despite the challenges, becoming a VTS in Dentistry has been incredibly rewarding:
- Improved Confidence – I now approach dental procedures with a deeper understanding and a higher level of skill. Veterinarians frequently ask for my opinion, which makes me proud to know my expertise is valued.
- Professional Opportunities – Specialization has opened doors to teaching, consulting, and leadership roles within veterinary dentistry. I no longer work in a clinic; instead, I am dedicated to teaching veterinary technicians about dentistry full-time.
- Higher Standards of Care – I advocate for better dental practices in clinics, ultimately improving patient health.
- Networking and Mentorship – I have joined a community of specialists who continuously push the field forward.
- Personal Fulfillment – There is immense satisfaction in mastering a field and being able to pass on knowledge to the next generation of technicians.
